Compression & Follow Up

At the Morrison Vein Institute, we offer procedures that treat the problem at its source, which makes our treatments quicker, more effective and less painful than traditional methods. But the continued success of any vein treatment depends on you.

Elevate your legs
It is important that you elevate your legs at every opportunity in order to encourage circulation. If you cannot elevate your legs during the day, do so for 30 minutes as soon as you return home from work.

Exercise
Physical activity is a simple and effective method of improving vein health by pumping blood up the leg against the force of gravity. Keep in mind a weak muscle won't pump as well as a strong one, so be sure to set a regular exercise program to increase the effectiveness of the treatment. Although exercise is advised, high impact activities such as weight lifting should be avoided for
3 weeks after treatment.

Wear Compression Hose
Compression hose have been proven to be very effective when used for preventative care, during treatment, and for long-term therapy after treatment.

Graduated compression prevents blood from pooling in the leg veins, thereby helping overall circulation. Compression is greatest at the ankle, gradually decreasing up the leg. There are many different styles, textures and colors for both men and women, so you can find the stockings that are best for you - and your recovery.

Limit sun exposure
Just as the sun can cause damage to your skin, exposure to the sun also affects the elastic layer of your veins. Heat causes varicose veins to widen and can also lead to discoloration.

Avoid hot baths, saunas and jacuzzis
Following a hot bath, you are more likely to feel uncomfortable, not relieved of symptoms. That's because exposure to heat causes veins to dilate and become larger. In order to maintain venous function, vein size needs to remain consistent.

Other simple tips include:

  • Take Tylenol for pain. Do not take aspirin, ibuprofens or anti-inflammatory medications for 4 days.
  • Drink 6-8 glasses of water per day
  • Apply ice to healing veins if you experience any tenderness
  • Avoid wearing high heels
  • Control your weight
  • Avoid tight pants and tight belts
